A district that suffers the loss of youth, trying to find a way to ignite the passion within them is hard to achieve. A group of students and professors from a medical university, put their social responsibility into practice, sounding the bugle engraved deep in the ground. In a blink of an eye, three years passed…..
At the mention of Shigang, the first things that comes to the minds of people are the bicycle lane and the Shigang reservoir. True, while the district has a lot of tourist destinations to offer. However, due to the district's overreliance on primary industry, Shigang suffers from severe emigration. The situation became even worse after the 921 earthquakes. Now, Shigang is waning.
The decreasing number of youth, as if showing the waning fate of Shigang, also threatens the livelihood of elderlies. The lack of proper care for senior citizens is not only a family problem but also a problem for society. Seeing this, Professor Lee from Chung Shan Medical University was determined to lead the school USR party to bring the resources into the fields, so that the elderlies can age gracefully and peacefully.
Elders choking on food is always a major topic in medicine, the incomplete ingestion might even cause Aspiration Pneumonia. The deterioration of the muscles in the throat, and the loss of the ability to swallow, is the main cause of why choking is so common for the older generation. How we can change the situation for the elders in Shigang, has become our prime focus.
From a medical perspective, there's a lot of different ways to solve the problem of choking. However, it involves complicated medical knowledge, which might decrease the elderlies' willingness to cooperate, or even cause a psychological rejection. Therefore, how we simplify this complicated knowledge and incorporate it into our daily lives, is our primary challenge. After our brainstorming session, the idea of exercising the muscle in our throat with 'singing' came to mind. By using our vocal cords, it also involves the usage of other muscles, achieving our purpose.
A lovely grandma once asked after the first interaction " I can sing all the songs from today, what other songs are you guys teaching us next?" After discussing with the Shigang Farming Community and the Public Health Center, we have decided to start by promoting our home economics classes. With every interaction, the inhabitants have become more and more excited about the activities, anticipating what's coming next.
Singing doesn't require intricate instruments or specialized practice rooms. It's something you can do anytime, anywhere. By signing, we walked into their lives. It's not a mere job or responsibility, it became something even more intimate. Singing not only resolved the issue of eating for the elders but also added new life and joy into Shigang.
Apart from the choking problem, the USR party from Chung Shan Medical University also have their eyes on living conditions. Through the expertise of nutritionists, we advertise the importance of protein intake in a vegetarian diet, and also implicating the ideas from the Public Health major, breaking the invisible barrier in between Shigang and medicine. Furthermore, from another point of view, applying the moral of psychology major not only increases the knowledge of senior citizens, we can also be more mindful of the feelings of the inhabitants. Professor Lee mentioned that "Medical Universities' responsibility is not just to cultivate talented doctors, but also to elevate the district's living condition.", "Our goal was clear, which is to make Shigang into a sustainable living condition."
Each district has its problems and also has its way to solve them. The inhabitants of Shigang made a path for themselves, with their voice they sang a song of hope. These elderlies no longer need to be looked after; they are the daybreak for Shigang.
