Friendly Fishing Environment, Talents Nurturing, Infusing Marine Science and Technology Into Local Fishing Village
With Attention, We Protect the Industry
With Truthfulness, We Inherit our Skills
With Good Faith, We Sustain the Aquaculture
Pingtung, being one of the most famous area for its aquaculture technology, lots of aquaculture fishery skills are being invented, and are kept for the younger generation. The fishermen have created lots of aquaculture miracle over the years with faith and determination.
But gaps of collaboration between industry and school is growing bigger these few years. The average age of this industry growing significantly, and people refusing in innovation, are causing a halt to the industry.
In order to create a solution to the current situation, team of Department of Aquaculture are trying to apply Innovative Friendly Aquaculture Management technology to the industry, hoping to not only bring healthy and delicious dishes to the table, but also saving energy for the future sustainable development.
Business, Aquaculture, and Skills are our Core Objective.
Attention, Truthfulness, and Good Faith are our Core Spirit.
Preserve, Inheritance, and Sustain are our Core Value.
Lots of by-product of aquatic product processing are being left over, such as fish skin, fish bones, and fish scales. Even though these by-products can be used for making animal feed and fertilizer, how to produce more valuable products in order the maximize the value of aquatic resource is still a main topic to discuss.
With the idea of Circular Economy, teachers of Department of Seafood Science instruct their student to extract collagen from fish scales, put it into food process, producing odorless hydrolyzed fish scale collagen, an important process material which can be used widely in commodities such as : Marine Collagen Cosmetics, Fish Scale Collagen Pearl, Fish Collagen Ice-cream, and Collagen Duck Egg Tofu… etc., hoping to achieve Zero Waste Production, and make collagen more inexpensive and accessible to customers.
Lin-Bian, A village that needs to be seen─the Hard Work of the Village Chief
Under the blistering sun, a village woman on her motorcycle slowly approached the Kufuliao Park. She started her interview with the teachers and students of Department of Business and Computing and Department of Shipping and Transportation Management. Simple, hardworking, and heartwarming are the first impression that the Village Chief Li-Mei gave us.
While residing in the village, we saw quite a few volunteers handling wastes. The village chief told us that the funeral expenses of the family in straitened circumstances are from the income by selling these recycled wastes and selling duck eggs. By the words of the Village Chief, we can see problems caused by local society aging and economy depression.
She also told us that, not having enough resources, and having much disadvantages, Ren-He village of Lin-Bian township needs to be seen. In order to provide a better and much more interesting living environment, we put lots of efforts in attending competition, won lots of rewards, trying our best to gain people's attention.
With this kind of selfless deed, we start to rethink if there is anything we can do to help them.
p 6AM in the morning, right here in the fish farm, with the sound of the air pumps, Mr Hsiang-Chih who woke up way earlier to feed his groupers, has slowly arrived at the seventh team of production and marketing, Lucky Seven. He is the leader of the team, and lives in a white single-story house built in his backyard by himself. He came all the way back from the US, and went from knowing nothing about aquaculture, to leading his team winning the award of being the Top Ten Production and Marketing Team of the Nation.
The Ning-Hsuan Couple, who are also members of the seventh production and marketing team, inherited their fish farm from the elder generation, created a shop called "Hsian-Hsian-Yu Shop". Not only do they run it in an innovative way, but also attend lots of exhibition to gain exposure.
Teachers and students of Department of Industrial Design worked closely together with the local villagers on brand building and fish farm renovation, hoping to inject vibes of the university into traditional industries and create a new path with the local professionals.
An event of slow fish education, held by Institute of Marine Affairs and Business Management, trains students to organize aquaculture information, and present them to students in elementary schools located near fish farms. The schedule includes a tour to NKUST's demonstration fish farm, observing the environment and circumstances of farming fishes and shrimps, and then having the students and teachers color a picture book specially designed for them, describing all the stories and features, finish up with reflective feedback.
The purpose of this event is to let the students know where and how the seafood on the table came from, and to know more about their hometown. Picture books that are drawn in the event will be made into textbooks, and can be used for educating more younger students in the future.
