Jenteh Junior College of Medicine, Nursing and Management USR
Due to the aging population and the majority population of solitary elders, Nanzhuang Township is selected as the USR(University Social Responsibility) area. It is discovered that combining the medical expertise of our school can provide the solidary elders with multiple cares. Therefore, the school made a connection with the local clubs to promote this project, developing a long-term caring program based on Nanzhuang Township’s local needs.
The teacher and the students of the school entered the community, implemented the course to it, including household health assessments, household environment safety assessments, rehabilitation training, using APPs to promote Slow City Silver Hair Health Promotion Activities, accompanying the elders to walk out of the houses and engage in the community activities with an aim to lower the elders’ debilitating syndromes. At the same time, with the help of the professional medical staff, it is hoped that we could maintain and possibly improve the elders’ physical, psychological, cognitive, emotional ,and social and interpersonal health, and therefore create a society that is self-caring and filled with supporting networks.
It’s really hard to start a conversation with the elders
The first time interviewing an elder, it was really hard to start a conversation. Thanks to the help of the teachers, I was able to naturally talk about the topics we prepared. During the interview, I plucked up the courage and asked Grandpa if he had fish. After starting the conversation, I felt less nervous. With the experience of this interview, now I know what other questions that I could ask and how to ask them in a better way. Hopefully, I can begin a conversation with the elders much more naturally next time.
USR community exercise and rehabilitation
In the morning, we expected the elder ladies at the community center. Then, when we interacted with them on the stage, we feel like we own the whole place. It’s not something that others can easily experience. Also, it is because of such experiences, I learned about how to host an event, such as standing in the audiences’ shoes, and thinking about what they might feel about this. For instance, were the activities too hard for them, could we be speaking too fast …etc. When I helped the old lady successfully perform the posture we were working on, she looked at me and said “thank you”. At that moment, I felt really joyful and felt a great sense of achievement. Also, the old lady looked at me with such sincerity and loves which totally warmed my heart. From learning how to help the elders doing rehabilitation exercise back at school, to actually apply the techniques at the scene, I felt extremely good. Unlike learning all the knowledge back at school, at the actual scene, we must think critically and apply what we’ve learned according to the situation. Also, we need to learn to communicate with others and learn from each other. It’s not an easy task to take the elders to walk out of their homes for rehabilitation. It takes a group of teachers and students with expertise and integrated resources. If such activity exists all around Taiwan, I believe that the number of healthy lives in Taiwan will increase.
Make the home safe and easy for the elders to exercise
What I could do if the elders were my own family or this was my own home?First, we recognize the dangers easily encountered in the lives of elders, then prevent the occurrence of such dangers and difficulties. With various professional training and protections, we design lessons to help the elders recognize the hazardous situations they might encounter in their daily lives. I feel better when I see their smiles. The caring and greetings we had during the interaction with the elders were more special than what we had among people of our ages. What we had was family love and friendship. We made a deal with the elders that they must be more confident, healthy, and happy.
The most touching experience during the interview
The most touching experience during the interview was that, in the end, after we said goodbye, those elder ladies weren’t leaving until we were totally out of their sights. It was as if they had treated us like their grandchildren. Hopefully, we had brought a sense of happiness to them.
During the conversation with the elders, they were really happy. One elder lady even gave me two hugs when we were saying goodbye. That really warmed my heart. In short, we thought that all the elders deserved equal and warm treatments. We shouldn’t neglect them simply because of the inconvenient traffic or distance.
At the Long Stay nights, we had such a great time reading the papers. I really enjoyed the feeling of group learning. Seeing every one making such an effort sorting all the data, we were so proud of ourselves. This is really an efficient way of learning.
