The Promotion of "STEM with A" Innovation Education
In 2015, the United Nations adopted the “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” as the follow-up agenda for future development. Among the 17 goals, Research Center for Technology and Art at National Tsing Hua University (hereinafter referred to as the center) focuses on the indicators of “Quality Education”, “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure” and “Reducing Inequality”. Based on the experience in promoting “STEAM Making - When Popular Science meets Art”, we have achieved the results of cultivating the teachers in 83 elementary schools in Taiwan as seed teachers. In consideration of the actual needs of geographical and remote regions, we have found Shakeng Elementary School in Hengshan Town, Hsinchu County. We have expanded the establishment of the “STEM with A - Creative and Playful School” demonstration base in the school with the cross-domain professional skills of Maker, Technology, and Art, focusing on K12 interdisciplinary creative education. During experiencing and practicing STEM, the students can feel “Art” and “Adventure”.
Shakeng Elementary School was founded in 1917 and is a century-old school. It is located in neither a rural nor a city. The government subsidies are relatively little, with fewer than 35 students. In a difficult era of fewer children, changes in community structure, and population exodus, the principal Zhi-hong Yu still stands up on for educational mission, leading a team to create a high-quality and forward-looking educational environment for students.
In the process of preparing and constructing the creative and playful School, Principal Yu and his team discussed and selected the natural classroom to be rebuilt, with the gentle breeze and broad vision. After careful planning and space design, it was completed in one month. The side cabinets, fans, lighting, power supplies, warehouses, storage were all in hand. However, the most important thing in the maker space is to have a work table. As an interdisciplinary maker, of course, it is his own desk to make his own. Therefore, the school invites teachers and students to work together under the big tree on the campus. Everyone held the sandpaper and sand mill in their hands and finally made eight wooden tables and chairs. According to the previous teaching skills and the team division, the assembly was completed, and the creative school announced the official opening.
The neighbor of Shakeng Elementary School, Dadu Elementary School, has heard of such a good chance to learn, and they are asking whether they can have the opportunity to experience learning together. Based on the concept of expanding education, we have arranged “Seed Teacher Cultivation” to especially educate teachers who are interested and willing to learn. The creative and playful school explained the core concept of “STEM with A '' education and taught the operation and application of a laser cutting engraving machine. The process went smoothly and successfully. This is not only the best example but also the best way to improve diverse learning. We hope that “STEM with A” can thrive in the national elementary education, allowing teachers to understand the operation of digital machines and tools, hands to build their own creativity, as a model for students.
The summer vacation is approaching. On the first day of the hot summer, Professor Su-Chu Hsu led the team to let “STEM with A'' once again arouse the high learning interest of Shakeng Elementary School students. The team considered the grades involved and the significance of popular science education. Therefore, we launched the interesting units “Toothbrush Robot” and “Floating Block”, which were participated in the whole process by Principal Yu from Shakeng Elementary School, who not only accompanied the study but also constantly took pictures. Professor Hsu dedicates the production procedures, scientific theories of the workshops in stages, subtle science principles, and patient explanations, twenty-three children felt fun and excited all the time.
This project is promoted by the team driven by Professor Su-Chu Hsu, looking forward to becoming the leader of the campus “STEM with A”, leading children into the wonderful exploration of science and art, so that the students will have abundant creativity and imagination early. In the advanced future, we will combine the Science Park of Hsinchu City, allowing young students to see the glorious prospects of cross-domain through science and technology. This mission enables National Tsing Hua University to implement cross-domain innovation education and to make unlimited progress in cultural creative industries and technological innovation so that the use of technology art and smart cultural creative space will be pushed to the extreme.
In the past six years, the Research Center for Technology and Art has been promoting the “STEM with A” in K12 interdisciplinary creative education. Besides, the center has advocated STEAM123 guided teaching to let children be curious and hands-on Tinker, to be Explorer that explores interdisciplinary principles, and to be the Maker of creative transformation and practice creation. The whole concept of creative education is not only a seed to induce children's creativity, but also an important subject to activating the brain.
