[Initiation of organizing disability experiencing activities]
Assistive technology has great benefits for improving the quality of life of people with disabilities. By founding assistive devices on technology, service, and human capacity, assistive technology can be applied to people with disabilities or elderly people to effectively improve their lives, enhance their life independence and social participation.
In order to promote assistive technology and related knowledge to the general public, the project team, the Taipei City Spinal Cord Injury Association and the Republic of China Art Promotion Association for people with disabilities jointly devises disability experiencing activities. Through this activity, the public and students will experience the inconveniences in the lives of people with disabilities. Trying to arouse empathy among the students and draw the attention to barrier-free facilities, friendly spaces and related issues by sharing of the life experiences of the lecturers with disabilities. We also introduced assistive devices and disability-related knowledge. Hoping to organizeing the activities could increase the opportunities for the people with disabilities to connect with society, and they can contribute their knowledge and strength to others.
The team started byfrom cooperating with Taipei City Bei-Tou Community University to organize disability experiencing activities. Then through high school's multiple courses, we bring the activities to high school, and cooperate with the team of Fei-Yue Medical Camp organized by the Department of Medicine of Taipei Medical University. Our team is actively looking for opportunities to cooperate with various units and groups to promote this experiencing activity. Hope that it can help people with disabilities have more sources of income by organizing disability experiencing activities, and also make them connect with society in the future.
[During the process of cooperation, I see and empathize with your inconvenience]
In the process of running these courses, there were some unexpected incidents and experiences in each event. I learned that the current living environment in Taiwan is still quite unfriendly to the people with disabilities. When the event was held at Luo-Dong High School. Before the event started, there was an incident that deeply shocked us. In order to comply with the Ministry of Education's guidelines of reimbursement, it is impossible to afford the lecturer with disabilities to take a barrier-free taxi directly from Taipei to Luo-Dong, so he took the train to Luo-Dong by himself. Unexpectedly, after leaving the station, he could not hail a barrier-free taxi. With no other choice, he moved from the train station to Luo-Dong High School with an electric wheelchair under the high temperature of more than 30 degrees. In the hot summer, the school is 1.3 kilometers away from the station, taking 17 minutes by walking. It is a bit intolerable for people who are able to move freely, not to mention the spinal cord injury patient whose body cannot dissipate heat.
During the Lan-Yang Girls’ High School event, the team member deeply felt the inconvenience of people with disabilities when they guided the lecturer with disabilities to the venue. Actually, the distance from the school gate to the venue is not far, but the lecturer with disabilities must move through various barrier-free facilities. The distance is almost twice or even several times as ordinary people. The barrier-free facilities at the campus are not all connected. You must pass through the bumpy road to reach it. There is another story. After the medical camp, the team made a lot of efforts to find a suitable place to dine with the lecturers with disabilities.
[Being empathetic is the first step to help each other]
Before we actually interacted directly with the lecturers with disabilities, these various things are not matters in our daily lives, and we usually don't pay attention to whether the living environment is friendly to the people with disabilities or not. Therefore, it is believed that for the general public and students there is very little opportunity to interact with the people with disabilities, and they will not know the relevant knowledge about assistive devices. The disability experiencing activity made students to experience the actual feeling of losing part of their physiological functions through four levels to excite their empathy and experience the inconvenience. In the future, we hope when they meet the people with disabilities or underprivileged groups, they can be more empathetic with them and to help them. By introducing the relevant knowledge of assistive devices to make students could provide appropriate and practical help to the people with disabilities.
During the activity, the lecturers with disabilities share their experiences which brings courage and positive energy to students, and enables they to overcome many difficulties and hurdles with a more positive attitude in their future life.
[Dream is like a pair of wings]
Zheng-Wei Lin, a member who worked closely with the project, was paralyzed from the neck downward due to a diving accident. However, he has not given up his life since then, and is still striding toward his dream step by step. He is now a street performer and a lecturer, sharing his thoughts and stories to encourage other people with disabilities and help them get jobs. "A dream is like a pair of wings. As long as you don't give up, you can realize your ambitions and fly on the stage of life." Lin believes and fulfills it this way.
