The classroom is not far away, just around the Nanguan line
The "Nanguan Line" refers to the administrative districts of Rende, Guiren, Guanmiao, and Longqi in Tainan, has been an important route to remote rural areas since ancient times. Like most agricultural cities, in recent years it faced the problems of agricultural population loss and cultural gaps. Chang Yu-Li, chairman of Spatial Design department of Kun Shan University, has realized that to attract young people to return home, what is needed is a group of "friends" who can learn and support each other since started to promote University Social Responsibility in 2017. Now we have a group of "New Friends" like Guiren Farmans' Association, Xinma Temple Community Development Association, Hong-Wa-Cuo Elementary School, local young farmers, cultural and historical workers, etc. Together we walk out of the campus, hoping to build the Nanguan Line to become a Food Culture School with the idea of "food, travel, slowly".
“The classroom is in the field, under the tree, by the stream.”
"School is a co-learning mechanism. It has no boundaries. The classrooms are where the courses are." The principal investigator Chang Yu-Li described the changes in university courses, so before the rainy season, teachers and students of the Spatial Design department picked up bamboo, thatch and twine to help the "Rammed-Earth House" in the Shugu Park put on a new roof. After Professor Lin Hsiu-Hui and the bamboo weaving masters Chang Yung-Wang and Chang Chun-Po surveyed, they proceeded to repair the thatched roof and truss reinforcement. During the process, the masters taught the students how to use the bamboo bending method, and explained the traditional construction technology and the application of bamboo structure in the field of spatial design. Students who participated in said that it was really throbbing to learn a series of construction methods from the demolition to the reconstruction of the roof, and it also helped the students to develop more grounded techniques with the teachers passing down their skills and knowledge through the actual field.
“Deeply cultivate food and agriculture education, and reverse the inherent impression of farming.”
The Nanguan line is rich in products such as Guiren custard apple, Chijia flowers, Guanmiao pineapple, Longqi bamboo shoots, etc. The most pressing issue at the moment is the abandonment of farming and the lack of linkages in the catering industry. Friendly farming is facing marketing difficulties. Our long-term partner, local youth farmer Hsieh Ping-Yin revealed to us, "If young people think that farming is a poor and bitter industry, how can they give up their urban office life and return to their hometown?" Therefore, we try to convey the concepts of sustainable agriculture and friendly environment education. Nowadays, young people generally lack the knowledge of "agriculture". We combine the school's courses to let young farmers tell their own farming stories, take students into the farmland to experience the daily life of farmers, and think about the possibility of agricultural waste recycling economy, so that the producers and consumers can reconnect again. At the same time, the "Field Nutrition Workshop" co-organized with Chinese medicine practitioners and professors of the Food and Beverage Management Department, was introduced to the community to understand the close relationship between the body and the food. Through discovering the new ingredients and old tastes, it is also a new exploration and experience of the food culture.
“Connect young people and tradition with short jaunt.”
Ren-Shou Temple in Guiren District, Bao-Si Dai-Tian Temple, and Shan-Xi Temple in Guanmiao District are the most important local folk cultural assets and belief centers. We feel that the temple is like a local museum, which embodies various aspects of local humanities and history. Therefore, the graduate students of the USR team planned a "small cultural heritage tour" starting from the temple. In addition to visiting the Ren-Shou Temple and learning the architectural features of the temple, the schoolchildren from the dragon dance team and drum dance team of Gueinan Elementary School joined forces to bring a 30-minute art performance. Parents and children also experienced the turtle begging activity composed of local ingredients.
“The Roadside Banquets have more Human touches.” Food is the sum of life. It exists in festivals, celebrations, work and travel. It connects feelings during dish sharing. Perhaps this is the reason why Taiwanese love the banquets culture. “Guiren Cultural Jaunt” invited people to experience the simple living habits of Guiren, understand its history and food culture at a leisurely pace. The cultural and historical workers - Hsu Keng-Chao and Chien Chen-Chuan gave an in-depth guided tour from the nostalgic rice shop to the Hong-Wa-Cuo three-section compound, and the local senior chief Su Chia-Chin also specially arranged to demonstrate his specialty dish, Braised Noodles.
"Will you continue to come here? It's far from the school!" After the event, people always ask the same questions. We always answer, "Yes, we will, it’s not far from here." I think it’s because the distance between hearts has shortened.
