The disappearance of the local language, the declination of traditional customs, and the cultural landscape buried by the cement skyscraper is the dilemma Taiwan is facing. We are living in a society that values economic development and long-term neglect of local culture; perhaps in a couple of years, the wisdom of the ancestors can only be seen in the museum. In order to save this decline and for the generations to come the General Education Department of Yuan Ze University has decided to carry out the mission of preserving the local culture and leading more people to realize the importance of cultural assets.
Adjacent to Yuan Ze University is Long Gang and Xiaoli areas which are rich in diverse local cultures. Long Gang was originally a large tea plantation in the Zhongli area and later became the center of military installations after the war. The placement of troops from the Yunnan-Burma region made Long Gang an area rich in exotic cultures; Xiaoli area benefit from the endless stream of springs made it the first area in Taoyuan to have paddy fields. Hakka people, led by the seven families, entered Xiaoli and established their homes here in the Qing Dynasty. Ancestral shrines tell the history of the Hakka people's development in the Xiaoli area.
Starting from Neili, where Yuan Ze University is located, bike among the boundary between Zhongli and Taoyuan tableland to the south. Long Gang, at the top of the mountain, and Xiaoli, at the foot of the mountain, are having different cultural characteristics. Both locations are less than 10 kilometers away from Taoyuan's first farm pond “Xiaoli Big Pool”. There are so many different cultures and ethnic groups packed in this small area. Therefore, We develop three dimensions “Cultural Guiding, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and Field Research” to construct Taoyuan Cultural Corridor" (Long Gang and Xiaoli area) as the epitome of Taiwan's development. We hope students can gain a firm foothold from Yuan Ze University to explore, guide, and research local culture and knowledge; eventually, transform into outstanding individuals and establish care for the local community.
Cultural Guiding, Field Research, and Placemaking are our “three arrows” to promote local culture. Teaching students about the local knowledge, so they can spread out the knowledge to others through storytelling and cultural guiding. Field Research project reflects social issues by cultivating students' ability on documentary filming and appreciation; at the same time, this project narrates lively local stories through advanced technology. Cultural Guiding project aims at the concept of "Big hands hold small hands", we cooperate with local elementary school and high school to deepen the cognition of local culture. Placemaking project targets having a deeper connection with the local people. We borrowed an old house, located in the local community as our base. Utilizing the space as the window between visitors and local people. Providing a “living room” for local people to welcome the visitors and meanwhile allow the visitors to know the local community. Bring more development possibilities to the local community by bringing the crowd to them.
Hsu-Tung, Teng, the local Zhuxiao Community Development Association, said: “Yuan Ze is ZhuXiao’s second fool, and we are the first!” Bing-Hua, Ma, the director-general of the Long Gang Mosque, once said, “Yuanzhi is the most friendly friends to us Muslims.” We are deeply inspired by the feedback we have given. Hoklo, Hakka, new inhabitants, indigenous people, and the Yunnan Hui Muslims from the Golden Triangle area are the inhabitants in Long Gang and Xiaoli area. Through this project, we yearn to let students and the public know the precious local cultural assets and the inhabitants to be proud of their own characteristics.
We hope that, in the future, we can cultivate young people who can tell Taoyuan stories and reporters who use media tools to promote local culture. They can play an important role in Taoyuan City Government’s urban storytelling project. Local universities cooperate deeply with middle schools, elementary schools, and the local community so that college students can gain more local cultural knowledge and become skills for earning a living in the future. Furthermore, middle school students can better understand their culture, and primary school students start to care and be proud of their hometown.
