National Taipei University of Technology founded Atayal Jian-Shi Agriculture with Quri Tribe in Hsinchu
Since March 2018, National Taipei University of Technology has been working with Quri tribe from Yufeng Village, Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County, which locates more than a hundred kilometers away from the campus, conducting Indigenous People's Humanitarian Architecture and Agroecological Innovations Development Program. Members of college utilize their professional knowledge to initiate discussion with tribes, while clarifying their needs. Thus Atayal Jian-Shi Agriculture was founded in 2018.
National Taipei University of Technology and Quri tribe advertise Atayal farming technique through brand marketing, promoting eco-friendly vegetarian diet. Through bilateral communication, they discuss foreign and domestic issues with collaborators, forming international educational network and USR training facility.
Combining architecture, civil engineering, marketing, design, cold chain, and interaction, National Taipei University of Technology meet social demands through professional capabilities. It provides practical sessions in accords to tribal demands, while enhancing essential abilities of undergraduates. Through diverse concepts of colleges and departments, the university creates innovative modes of management through innovation and practices.
The university conducts new management from cultural, industrial, and technical aspects, endeavoring to renovate the tribes. In addition to integrating tribal consensus and improve local working opportunities, the project would also sustain local environment, leaving a well-balanced ecosystem for posterity.
NTUT and CYCD have collaborated on marketing design for Quri tribe. The Facebook fan page of Atayal Jian-Shi Agriculture is founded to increase social exposure for the brand, which provides a marketing platform for vegetables, explanation over agricultural products, and information regarding harvest season purchases. Images and videos are provided for promotion as well. So far the fan page has 2464 followers, which each post receives 890 clicks on average. Promotional videos have been shot by a professional filming crew for local farmers, which advertise Quri tribe’s eco-friendly farming technique. In addition to managing social network the staff also plan to promote the brand image through urban market, cold chain system design, toxins examination.
NTUT's architectural team possesses years of construction experience. It manages issues of social service and public space, and encourages youngsters to return to tribes for building new houses through training sessions of college. It is hoped that the new living quality of buildings could draw youngsters to return to their hometown. For the redesign of meditation hut on Prayer Mountain, students collaborated with local elders and church on on-site assessment, investigation, blueprint design, model production, and proposal. In July 2020, a small shop has been constructed on Yulao Terrace. In addition to practical use for sale and viewing advantage, it is hoped that tourists could stay on the terrace and purchase agricultural products and handicrafts, in order to increase the exposure and income of local farmers.
In addition to public space project, the team has utilized its proficiency in architecture, cold chain, and civil engineering, and constructed Atayal smart fridge with the proposal of local elders. The fridge is built with eco-friendly, waterproof, and antiseptic composite materials. Mud walls have been replaced by concrete walls, with the addition of temperature and humidity sensors and mountain spring. The natural fridge is built on modern Atayal wisdom and modern technology.
NTUT has conducted academic researches concerning sustainable development with Chulalongkorn University, Kyushu University, Saga University, and Tokyo Metropolitan University. The topics include management of eco-friendly farms, public housing design, and soil conservation, and reconstruction of natural view. Quri tribe has been conducting sermons with Iban of Malaysia, generating agricultural communication through cultural and religious exchange. In the future, the university would evaluate the experience of using agricultural technique of Quri tride to transform Iban’s living economy, in order to develop friendly exchange with domestic and foreign aboriginals.
In the future, NTUT would continue to spend efforts on creating better lives with tribal partners, while crafting sustainable farms and promoting sustainable development of tribal community, making them into a standard of development for South Pacific aboriginals.
