Tatung University has being focusing on promoting ’University Social Responsibility’ (USR) for a long term. For the purpose of creating the learning environment which consists of innovative teaching and social activity, a series of course design and workshops were conducted. It encourages students to study independently and care locally. By understanding the differences between average person and visually impaired people’s requirements and problems in life, students contribute their expertise to practice USR.
Develop friendly space for Taipei school for the visually impaired to fulfil USR
The Design College of Tatung University re-build internal environment for Taipei School for the Visually Impaired via the subject of ‘Interior Design’. It includes the flow line in the restaurant, accommodation, and lighting. Taipei School for the Visually Impaired was surprised by the power of design which makes the environment friendlier. Due to students’ age range cross kindergarten through senior high school, students of Design College conducted observation on site and re-designed the space into a friendly living and learning environment based on users’ needs. Despite Design College, students of the Chinese Language Expression subject applied the teaching material of ‘Walking and Reading on Zhongshan North Road’ to find the defect on the road by observation, more ideas were generated for future improvement to provide a safe environment for visually impaired people to enjoy the beauty of Zhongshan North Road.
The Deputy Director of Teaching and Learning Centre Yi-Chun Lee indicates that the core of the subject of Chinese Language Expression is developing the abilities of communicating with different populations and caring the society. Thus a class of students was arranged to solve problems for (the) visually impaired to improve their living environment. It presents that students in Tatung University have the ability and mobility to practice the spirit of the curriculum.
Understanding, Experiencing, and Feeling-Empathy Workshop
A two-day Feeling-Empathy Workshop was held for a deep understanding of visually impaired people’s inconvenience in life. The visually impaired teachers of Sen-Guang Li and Yu-Xin Li were invited to share their experience and guide Tatung University students to assist visually impaired people.
Visually impaired glasses and white canes were also prepared for Tatung University students to practice. Six groups of visually impaired people also share their working experience for students to describe Empathy Map and Persona with reality scenario. According to analyse visually impaired people from their perspective, students found their real emotion and pain point in normal life. After the practice, students opened their empathy and self-awareness and removed self-limitation and usual thinking pattern.
Inter-University Makeathon with Tatung University, Taipei Medical University and National Taipei University
The event of ‘Makeathon’ has been held for six years since 2015. For the purpose of extending the scale for more students from different professional fields, Taipei Medical University and National Taipei University of Technology were also jointed by Tatung University in 2020. It was the largest Makeathon event in Taiwan which crossed different universities to solve international issues, namely ‘Problem Solving for Better Health’ (PSBH). The ideal solution concepts were presented on 13th, September in Tatung University.
The students who came from different universities and fields worked together to generate solutions. Issues were divided into the categories of Medical Innovation and Social Innovation. Each group was consisted of inter-university students with their expertise of medical health caring, new media technology, and design creation. Within the supervision which came from Taipei Medical University Hospital, Taipei School for the Visually Impaired, Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired, Cihfang Caring Center, and Taipei Fine Arts Museum, a total of fifty issues in reality on site received the solution.
The Vice Principal of Tatung University- Chih-Fu Wu indicates that interdisciplinary learning could be fulfilled by an inter-university event such as PSBH. The key strength in this technology era is communication ability and execution ability which lead people to cooperate with each other in different fields and to provide solutions. It was a pleasure to collaborate with Taipei Medical University and National Taipei University of Technology to provide the resources and space to practice studying cross fields.
Applying the Power of Design to Create a Mascot for Taipei School for the Visually Impaired
The first mascot with Braille in Taiwan was designed by the students of Tatung University for Taipei School for the Visually Impaired to vote. The winning mascot was named Talented Guide Dog-Little La. The mascot was then 3D printed; the title of Taipei School for the Visually Impaired was shown on the belt with Braille. It is easy for the teachers and students to recognise the mascot.
In order to be familiar with the school mascot, students of (the)Mechanical Engineering Department of Tatung University served volunteer to help teachers and students of Taipei School for the Visually Impaired to paint colour on the Little La. Visually impaired students touched the mascot to feel the texture and then decided the colour style. Total blindness students helped with developing grass as the base for the mascot with the material of clay. All the students enjoyed the process with a lot of fun. Colourful mascots stood as a line with attractive appearances.
Tatung University and Taipei School for the Visually Impaired will continue the collaboration in the future. Nearly development of the grass and performance platform in Chih-Sheng Memorial Hall in Taitung University will be ready to open to (the) public soon; the first special guest is the band of Taipei School for the Visually Impaired. The teacher-and-student band will present the charm of music in the beautiful garden. This performance is scheduled on 19th October, 2020.
In terms of the cooperation activities, Tatung University and Taipei School for the Visually Impaired will work together for creating high-quality education and fulfilling the social responsibility of the university.
