Fooyin University leads students to reach out to the community and provides health care to local residents in the University Social Responsibility Project (USR) supported by the Ministry of Education. It offers many courses which provide students a variety of choices in discovering a real world, so that everyone experiences more than usual service-learning involvements. In addition, students acquire social skills, observation skills, and competencies through a serie of USR health-related courses. The overall goal of this project is "Building a Health Exemplary University " based on the strategies of "Multidisciplinary Achievement by Multidisciplinary Professionals" and "Rooting in Sustainability Development". Therefore, we begin a long journey to cultivate time bank and talent in community. Rooting Time Banking and Dementia Care in a Community—Let Time Become the Most Powerful Manpower Along with the aging of Taiwan’s society, and the demand for long-term care, healthy aging has been greatly increased. The core of this project is "a sustainable healthcare", involving the cogitation of "manpower development" and "caring community" to build up a time bank as a goal to enhance healthcare competence in the community. This project has four subprojects. Project one is the establishment of a manpower resource system to create an "Elderly Time Bank" in Daliao area. The "Elderly Time Bank" is to practice the concept of "time is money" adopting the concepts of reciprocity neighbors-helping-neighbors and the time management for the elderly. Now, we built "Time Bank 2.0" linking school resources with community centers to promote a mutual collaboration among nonprofit organizations in the community, such as Methodists Association Church in Daliao Community, Daliao Station of Hondao Volunteer Association, Houzhuang Community Development Association and “Tongxinyue Tea” (An all-age alley long-term care unit cooperated with Kaohsiung Datong Hospital and Fooyin University to provide all-age people with the services of social participation, health promotion, meals, and prevention and delay of disability). In order to increase elders care and home care services, to promote seniors to involve in Fooyin time-bank plan, to establish an exchange system for health care course, this project aims to create a human-centered caring relationship and a healthy and friendly environment for equality and reciprocity in community. Aging together in a Memorial Way under Fooyin Guardian—Let Higher Education Become the Biggest Nutrient for Supporting Old Tree Fooyin University, the health care professionals, is obliged to deal with the needs of community on the knowledge and skills of taking care of people with dementia and building health promotion in the community. Therefore, we provided a variety of complimentary workshops, such as garden therapy, acupressure, team-building activities, and elderly interview, etc. Moreover, such activities could enhance the literacy of community support system with aging- and dementia-friendly environment, so that the courses of Fooyin University engagement within society could achieve the transformation of social welfare. Creating a Shared-life and Shared-good Community —Let the Community be Filled with Friendliness We cooperated with local resources to strengthen the manpower of old, middle-aged and youth volunteers and recruited students and community people to promote the "Volunteer Training Course for Elder Care" with the strategy of "cultivation of local talents with social engagement of local caring and multidisciplinary capabilities". Establishment of dementia friendly community included three major elements: (1) To improve the literacy of a dementia-friendly environment- the empowerment of the people and volunteers through training courses and activities in order to provide a support service for caregivers; (2) To establish a demonstration and exhibition unit for dementia-friendly environment. (3) To construct a comprehensive resource for a dementia-friendly environment-integration of local community resources through cross-organizational collaboration to create an appropriate living and supportive environments. Technology into the Cultivation of Community Talents-learning without Borders The application software of smart mobile electronic device can provide an assistance to let the university build a digital platform for talent cultivation on the websites. There are many digital teaching materials which integrated the social engagement in the interdisciplinary courses, including, the interactive electronic books and multimedia teaching materials. Besides, we completed two digital multimedia training seminars for talent cultivation with a total of 87 people. This platform makes learning become more diverse and learning without borders. From Local to Global We connected with various countries to exchange our courses and experiences, including international health promotion, the theories and strategies of health promotion, horticultural therapy, and dementia care. In the meanwhile, we also cooperated with Kaohsiung Friends of Indonesia Association and led Vietnamese international students to the community and provided practice skills of aging care for international migrant workers and elderly with dementia or disability. The aims of this project focused on diverse health needs to seek the cooperation methods and strategies how to engage with the community in order to meet community demands and promoting a feasible business model, from local to global. Sustainability and Cultivation of Health Promotion Talent Since 2018, we have learned, practiced and implemented together from novice to competent with countless partners, communities, teachers, and students, and moved towards the overall development goal of this project. According to the core value of “health promotion for dementia and environmental-friendly community -act locally and view globally”, and enlargement of social resources, advancement of health promotion literacy, expansion of community participation and engagement, guidance of community sustainable development as the main principles, we invite a panel of experts from partner schools, government departments and medical institutions to conduct three SIG seminars for network exchanges for sharing practical experience for aging care in place, cooperating government-industry-university-institute alliance to guard aging together, promoting local consciousness on dementia care, improving environmental-friendly community. Although a comprehensive effort on improvement of care for those with dementia is difficult, there are more than 150 members who have put their vitality into the community along the way. Even though the hard work of the project implementation, we felt worth as we saw community elders' smiling.
