Origination — The DNA of Yang-Ming: "Education is like an inheritance, life is like a relay."
The spirit of National Yang-Ming University is to improve health in rural areas, which is deeply rooted in the DNA of the team NYMU. In 2020, NYMU chooses Nan-Ao as the base for the “University Social Responsibility Program’’. We built the “Rural Medical Training Center” in collaboration with “National Chiao Tung University”, “Taipei Municipal Nan Gang High School”, “National Yang-Ming University Hospital” and local resources. Teachers and students blend in with the Atayal tribe to immerse themselves in the community and work together to care for the health of the aborigines through shared learning and strength and promote common growth.
However, COVID-19 has changed the whole world. At the beginning of the epidemic, all industries were stagnant. The indigenous are the guardian of the pure land. Even the unemployed tribesmen returning home were elbowed whether they will infect their hometown. After a community assessment, we decided to make epidemic prevention as the focus with the tribal leaders together. We contacted volunteers from all directions and listened to the voices of the tribe. Tribesmen want to craft a protective mask with the traditional art of Atayal. Please see our story!
Tracing— Bearing Traditional Atayal Weaving
The skills of Traditional Atayal Weaving have gradually disappeared in this century. The weaving craftsmanship was inherited from the deceased mother-in-law, and we tried to integrate that weaving memory into life.
With their own hands, they weaved the connection and inheritance belonging to the Atayal ancestors and grandchildren, so that the Atayal people can see the traces of traditional culture in the new era. The children carry on the bravery and fearlessness of the nation and step on the happy step. Stand tall, Walk tall! Carry forward the Atayal weaving culture again!
Looking back—Atayal Woven Beauty Mask
The pandemic is raging, and people are in a panic! It reminds people that rapid development has exceeded the burden of nature and cannot be controlled by humans. People are beginning to stop and look at everything around them. Those neglected, neglected themselves and their relatives, lacked care and treatment. Every plant and tree of gratitude.
The creative concept of Atayal masks is to look back at the deep-seated maternal love in this period when everyone is in a danger, return to the most original love of mankind, and soothe the hearts of people who have been alienated from the epidemic. So we put the mother's knitting on the mask to protect our health!
Guard—Technology and Health Are Intertwined Together
The first work of the cooperation between Yang-Ming University and Chiao-Tung University is through the power of the “University Social Responsibility Program’’. A rainbow shows up in the sky of Nan-Ao. iHEART brings teachers and students of ergonomics and biomedical materials literacy from Yang-Ming University, teachers, and students of networking in industry marketing from Chiao-Tung University, and professional knowledge of Taiwan's uniform queen. Collagen which is the glory of Taiwan genteelly shores up the strong face of Taiwanese. High-tech antibacterial processing protects the Taiwanese and is determined to fight the epidemic.
It combines traditional Tayal weaving with soothing maternal love and anti-epidemic mask technology.

Pass down—The Medical Experience Camp Guards Children's Dreams
The health of the hometown should be taken care of by people on their own. We plant a seed of love for the health and care of the homeland in the hearts of the children of the Atayal tribe. We are waiting for them to grow up. National Yang-Ming University has jointly supported the development of tribal children’s epidemic prevention and medical education through the “University Social Responsibility Program” and “Rotary Club of Taipei Fu-Jung”. We held a “Rural Medical Experience Camp” on 13. July 2020; we invited Nan-Ao Elementary School 4th. and 5th. grade students, teachers, and nurses to join. Yang-Ming University participates in the “Medical Experience Camp in Rural Areas’’, and leads children to start their dreams of learning medicine through the “Medical Hall of Fame’’, “Medical Monopoly’’, “Elderly Learn Through Practice’’, and “Epidemic Prevention and Hand Washing Fun’’.
The CEO of Intelligent HEAlth for RemoTe areas (iHEART) Research Center, distinguished Professor Yiing Mei Liou said: “Education is the driving force of sustainable development. Education is a century-old mission to rear people. Don’t rush to the moment, but encourage students to value the local cultural industry and jointly promote community health. Spread the abilities which they have learned and fulfill generational sustainability”.
The rural medical experience camp invited Doctor Mu-Fan Li, a native physician who grew up in Nan-Ao, and a nurse Pin-Wen Lai from Nan-Ao Elementary School, to deliver speeches. Through mutual learning, exchanges, and joint practice of social responsibilities, we stimulated the ambitions of the children in the native village to expand their health vision, experience the friendliness of the elderly, promote community activation, and lead the future of the tribe.
Sustainability-Tayal’s Funny Hand Washing
The nurse Pin-Wen Lai from Nan-Ao Elementary School shared: “Although children know that washing hands is the key to epidemic prevention, they don't know whether their hands are clean or not.” The nurse Pin-Wen Lai from Nan-Ao Elementary School was counseled by Yang-Ming University to set up the Tayal’s Funny Hand Washing lesson. We used fluorescent agent game: we let the children unconsciously contaminate the representative virus fluorescent agent in the environment, wash their hands after teaching and practice, and then check themselves with the correctness of hand washing. Nurse Lai sees hope in the children. She has also become the best motivation to the children who will lead the future of the tribe to a better tomorrow. Nurse Lai will promote the fun lesson plan of epidemic prevention and washing hands to the whole town.
