Create an Aboriginal Tribal Industry with Original Diversity
The USR plan of National Ilan University (NIU), Tayal (Datong township, Nan'ao township) aboriginal tribal industry highlight project, attempts to create a characteristic industry of aboriginal tribes and was approved by the Ministry of Education. This project is mainly to support and coach the indigenous economic industry of two aboriginal villages (Datong township, Nan'ao township). The implementation field includes the community tribes in Datong township (Nanshan, Siji, Lunpi, Yingshi tribe); and Nan'ao township (Dongyue, Jinyue, Jinyang tribe). Inter-tribal communication and integration have constructed an aboriginal life community and united strength, shared and mutually aided culture, and created the tribal economic industry and ecological sustainable tribe for the purpose of tribal learning and sustainable development. The forest road 202 of Datong used to be the ancient migration path of the Mabtunux of Atayal tribe. It was a logging forest road from the mid-1940s and 50s. There was a residence for the staff of the forest road. At that time, welfare stations were also set up for the people to purchase the livelihoods. The supplies slowly declined from the 1970s. Except for the hunters, there was no people exploring and using this forest road.
Until 2010, Chairman Zhong of the Yingshi Community Association hoped to show the past glory and prosperity of the forest road for more mountain-loving people to visit, so together with the tribe elders and community cadres integrating and applying of native plants and traditional knowledge around the forest road 202. Constructing an ancient hunting trail with the theme of hunting cultural experience, combining Atayal culture and rich natural resources, through course arrangements, let residents and tourists understand the rich resources of the forest road and the mystery of the ancient Atayal trail, and get a glimpse of the imprint of humanity and history. The USR team of NIU meets Chairman Zhong and understands the tribe’s plan for ancient trial repairs and traditional knowledge inheritance. Director Wang, Director Zheng, and Chairman Zhong agreed to lead the students of NIU’s civil engineering department and aboriginal students of NIU to participate in the process of doing the repair work of the trail. Also inviting the tribal elders to teach the Atayal ecological trail construction method. Through the integration of the NIU's professional civil engineering and Atayal traditional construction methods, students can embody and understand the importance of group division of labor and cooperation. It is rare that the link of construction method knowledge between the modern civil engineering methods and the Atayal traditions. Chairman Zhong also personally hand-painted the section view of the hand-made trail construction method. Before entering the mountain, the tribal seniors and the students also had an exchange of opinions. The actual presentation of learning by doing was very heartwarming by all the participants.
Environmental education sustainability and the concept of nature" conform to the traditional knowledge of the tribal elders and the interaction between people and forest. It uses local existing materials as the base and does not use non-natural material from forests. The construction method and the environment are integrated. The students embody the wisdom of ecological sustainability and cherish the memory of the wisdom of the ancestors and the importance of the culture. In addition to revitalizing the tribal industry economy, the school fulfills its social responsibilities, cultivates talents, and sees the new hope of the tribe and the sustainable development of the local connection with the aboriginal society.
Nan'ao township is located at the southernmost tip of Yilan County. Driving on the Taiwan Provincial Highway No. 9 between Yilan and Hualien must pass through this township. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides and facing the Pacific Ocean on one side. The transportation is convenient. There are trains line and Taiwan Provincial Highway No. 9 passing through Nan’ao Railway Station. The environment and convenient transportation have created the characteristics of multicultural industries. Nan’ao township has diversified industries, such as Dongyue roasted flying fish, Nan’ao log shiitake mushroom, Aohua wild bees, loquat, Nan’ao eriocheir rectus, etc. The tourism industry includes Bihou Four District Hot Springs, Jinyue Lupi creek (Jinyue falls), Nan’ao ancient trials and mysterious lakes have become must-visit places for tourists in the county.
For Nan'ao Township, the NIU USR project mainly promotes the under-forest economy of the log shiitake mushroom industry and economic beekeeping. The log shiitake mushroom is the world’s first artificially cultivated mushroom and is also a local specialty of Nan’ao township. The cultivated log shiitake mushroom wood is mostly as Elaeocarpus sylvestris, Alnus formosana, Maple, Acacia, etc., cut into a section called log. The logs are drilled holes and planted shiitake mushroom to allow the shiitake mushrooms to absorb the wood from the logs as nutrients to grow naturally. The process of selecting wood, drilling holes, planting fungi, surface covering, and spawn running takes more than 10 months. Therefore, the unique aroma and taste of traditional cultivated shiitake mushroom are different from that of shiitake mushrooms growing in the shiitake sawdust substrate bags.
The plan has now guided the establishment of the "The First Production and Marketing Class for Aboriginal Log Shiitake Mushrooms in Nan'ao Township", which is developed in an organic and eco-friendly cultivation method and cooperates with government policies to produce high-quality, organic and eco-friendly log Shiitake mushrooms. In the future, NIU USR will also create the exclusive logo of Datong and Nan’ao, and the packaging design will be the unique brand and cultural heritage of the aboriginal people of the two townships. In this way, NIU’s USR project, Tayal (Datong, Nan’ao) Aboriginal Tribal Industry Highlights Project is to create an aboriginal tribal industry with original diversity, will integrate the NIU’s teachers and students, tribal associations, and workshops. Implementing local connections and finding the unique DNA of each tribe for development. In the future, the industry will move towards technology transfer, environmental friendliness, and multi-style operation, and become an important asset of the tribe’s aboriginal village. In addition, through the promotion of the USR project, the NIU offers relevant courses. Teachers and students are introduced into tribal communities, and the actual benefits of learning and application are united in the tribes, mutual experience, and sharing, etc. to enable students and tribal communities to absorb more intelligence and technology. The aboriginal tribes are full of vitality, and truly meet the expectations of the university to fulfill its social responsibility.

The various prizes are expected to be notified via email and also announced on the event official website on December 14 (Monday), please will the prize winners pay attention to the prize-winning information, and send back the relevant documents according to the notices & explanations; no separate notification will be issued.
Notices
- The event period for this event is based on Taiwan time, and the delivery of the rewards is restricted to regions including Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu.
- Please refer to the actual products for the event rewards, the pictures used on the website are for reference only; no request for changing colors, specs, transfers, or cash redemption will be accepted.
- Our event organizer will not be liable for the follow-up warranty and maintenance of the winning rewards; once the rewards have been collected, signed, and accepted, no reissuance of the rewards will be available if the rewards have been lost, peculated, discarded, or damaged. - 3rd Prize ~ 4th Prize (Winning prizes with a value less than NT$1,000 (inclusive): Prize winners should reply to the prize-winning notifying letter via Email within 7 days (including holidays) starting from the next day of the announcement of the list of winners, to confirm the collection of the rewards and to fill out the relevant info for sending the rewards (to confirm the address for sending the gift), and to accelerate the follow-up qualification review. If the prize winners do not complete the relevant info before the deadline, they will be deemed to give up the opportunity to collect the rewards, and no alternative gifts or reissuance of gifts will be available.
- When the prize winners have completed filling out the prize-winning info, the organizer will double-check the identification data of the prize winners, the rewards will only be sent out when all data is correct.
- All prize-winning qualification needs to be approved by the organizer before it becomes effective, all reviewing standards are based on the organizer as the only reference.
- If the prize winner did not fill in the data complete and correct, or cannot be in contact, or did not send back the required data within the announced time of the rewards, the prize winner will then be deemed to voluntarily give up the prize, no separate notification will be announced.
- According to the R.O.C Tax Act, if the prize winner is an individual residing in Taiwan, and the prize amount (value) exceeds NT$1,000 (inclusive), then a copy of both sides of the ID card will need to be handed in for taxation, which will be incorporated into individual income for the annual taxation. If the prize winner is not an individual residing in Taiwan, 20% of reward tax must be deducted from the reward first regardless of the prize amount before the prize winner can collect the reward. If the prize winner is not an adult, a household registration transcript must be provided along with a letter of consent from the legal representative. If the prize winner is unwilling to pay the tax first, he/she will be deemed to give up the reward, and no objections will be accepted.
- If the prize winner is in violation of the relevant event measures or has other dissents, the organizer is allowed to retrieve the reward and no objections from the prize winner will be accepted. If a judicial dispute is involved, all legal liabilities will be held by the individual. The organizer will not be liable.
- If it is confirmed that the participant used a hacker program or other method that evidently violates the fairness of the event in an attempt to influence the event, the organizer is then allowed to disqualify the participant immediately or to cancel the prize-winning qualification. Compensation will be liable if a loss is caused for the organizer due to this.
- For reasons that the organizer are not liable for, including a computer, network, telephone, or technique issues resulting in the delay, loss, incorrect, unidentifiable, or damaged data uploaded by the participants, the organizer will not be liable for any legal liability, and no objections from the participants and prize winners will be accepted.
- The organizer reserves the rights to review the qualification of the event participants, if the organizer or a third party has reported that the participants are found to use methods that are intentional or evidently violate the fairness of the event, or do not conform to the rules of this event, the organizer will then be allowed to cancel the prize immediately.
- The event measures are stated on the event platform, the organizer reserves the right to alter the event details at any time (participating method, gift content and quantity…etc.); the participants must agree completely to follow and obey the alterations of the event without any objection. Please refer to the announcement of the event measures if alternations have been made to the event measures, no separate notification will be available.
- Unmentioned matters of this event should be handled according to the relevant rules of the civil law; the organizer reserves the rights to maintain, modify, cease and explain the content, as well as to cancel the prize-winning qualification of any prize winner influencing other prize winners’ rights.
