Social Enterprises and Social Innovation Program: Positioning Social Problems
The program, established in 2018, consists of 33 courses provided by 19 faculty members from the College of Fine Arts and Social Sciences, the College of Education and the College of Science is. It aims to build the link between classroom education and community services and to encourage teachers and students to identify social needs and look for the possible solutions with our partner community organizations. The program is to help the students to learn how to respond the social needs and therefore might equip the students with more professional skills and knowledge to serve in the third sector after graduation. We design the courses with our community partners. Alone with teachers’ lectures, we invite community organizers and activists to deliver experiences, take students to conduct field works, participate in community projects, and finally finish the course by producing a proposal of project or a presentation of the community actions. So far, 352 students have enrolled in this program since 2018and 52 graduates have received the program certificate.
Platform for Social Innovation Practice (PSIP): Solutions-oriented Approach
The PSIP is established to facilitate the collaboration among the students, the faculty, the community partners, and the social enterprise experts intending to launch social missions and to make a social impact. Moreover, we encourage active student participation. Students looking for the public and private grant funding for social innovation are welcome to the platform. 2 full-time project managers will help them refine the proposals by consultation, training course, or special workshop. The PSIP also helps students to find internships and employment opportunities in the third sector.
Get involved in the community: What we have done
84 students of our project have spent their summer vacation and devoted to community service from north to south Taiwan in 2020. In Hengchun Township, a graduate works on a project titled “Finding the frogs: Ecotourism planning for Shuiwaku” with the community association. (Shuiwaku means “a hollow of frogs”.) They design in-depth experience tours with real escape games which could give the participants a better understanding of the culture and history of Shuiwaku Village. In Pingtung City, a group of students major in Chinese Literature and Psychology and Counseling work with Guilai community association in an oral history project titled “Guilai flourishes: Come home to happiness.” (Guilai means “coming home”.) The students interview the elders and collect local legends. All the stories will be represented in the form of picture book and published. The picture book will enrich the community tour. In Taiwu Township, the indigenous students worked with Kazazaljan Tribe to organize twice stream cleanup activities in May. They also set up a blog to record the action of “Keep Kazazaljan Clean” and to promote the concept of “Leave No Trace.” The students helped to design the environment lesson plans as well. In Meinong District, Kaohsiung City, our students started a summer camp for the pupils with the Dongmen Elementary School and Meinung People's Association. They designed group activities full of team challenges and games with knowledge of local environment and social issues. The interesting activities helped the school children learning through playing.
The mission of our project is to ignite the passion in the students and to prepare them to participate in social welfare activities and community organizing. With the funding from the Center for USR, Ministry of Education and the support from the our partner organizations in southern Taiwan, the interdisciplinary courses have been able to effectively enhance students’ on-site and situational awareness. The PSIP offers substantial assistance and facilitates advanced training for students. It puts on lectures, workshops, and events on trending topics of social enterprise and welfare innovation, and introduces mentors to help the students gain knowledge and practical experience. Most of the NPTU students are from Pingtung County, Kaohsiung City, and Chiayi–Tainan area. With the assistance of partner organizations in southern Taiwan, our long-term goal is aiming to build up a supportive vibrant incubator base in Pingtung University for those students and the youths who are interested in developing the careers in social welfare services, community organizing, and social enterprises.
