Zhi-Shan Foundation Taiwan was established in 1995. The name of Zhi-Shan was inspired by the first article in Great Learning: “The way of great learning consists in manifesting one’s bright virtue, consists in loving the people, consists in stopping in perfect goodness [Zhi-Shan].” Upholding the philosophy of respecting diverse cultures and loving without boundaries, we strive to bring together resources from the private sector, using empowerment and accompaniment as our service strategy. This makes us one of the very few NPOs in Asia dedicated to the long-term development of youths and children. People we serve include indigenous children in Taiwan, impoverished and ill children in Vietnam, ethnic minority girls in Yunnan, China, as well as infants in the northern rural areas of Myanmar.
Zhi-Shan provides approximately 90,000 children with food and education so that they do not feel alone on their journey to adulthood. In Taiwan, Zhi-Shan’s footprints can be seen throughout Greater Taipei as well as in indigenous townships such as Jianshi Township in Hsinchu, Heping District in Taichung, Namaxia in Kaohsiung, and Wutai Township, Pingtung. The services we specialize include childcare for indigenous children, school education, tribal talent empowerment, and so on. In the 6 central provinces of Vietnam, Zhi-Shan has long been involved in promoting education for impoverished children. We also provide infant care and medical treatment/rehabilitation programs, helping close to 10,000 children living in poverty. In 2006, Zhi-Shan extended its services to the mountain regions of Lijiang in Yunnan, launching education projects for ethnic minority girls as well as children in Dashan. Furthermore, we have helped trained infant caregivers and other education-related staff to address the problem of left-behind children in the region.
For 25 years, Zhi-Shan has repeatedly received recognition domestically and abroad; we are not only a Ministry of Health and Welfare-accredited outstanding foundation but have also received numerous commendations from the Vietnamese government over the years. In 2016, Zhi-Shan received the Labor Order 3rd Class from the President of Vietnam, who commended our contributions in children protection and education.
Because of Zhi-Shan’s reputable service, emphasis on professionalism, and non-involvement in politics and religion, we have become the first NPO in Taiwan to be invited by Plan International – one of the top 50 NGOs in the world – to become its partner in promoting international services in 2016. The two parties jointly launched child care programs in Myanmar by combining their cross-cultural experiences in child care to provide Burmese children and their parents with better preschool care. In 2019, we enhanced the localizing process for our Burmese child care project by collaboration with the local organization Meikswe Myanmar, hence benefitting local children directly.
Taking into consideration the scarcity resources and incessant demands for them, Zhi-Shan makes dedication and depth its principles: We focus on exploring the essence of a problem and share what we have learned. Albeit our solutions may not be as grandeur as others’, they nevertheless leave profound impacts behind. In indigenous townships, we recruited university students in the Hsinchu region to participate in evening guidance service. Students accompanied indigenous adolescents who left their home to pursue education and helped school boarding students with their homework or emotional-related issues so that they could study with peace of mind. Moreover, like-minded teachers have joined forces with students from the Department of Early Childhood Education to form a volunteer team that travels deep into the mountains in Yunnan to work with local kindergarten teachers, thereby bringing more love and empowering children in Dashan.
We welcome you to follow in the footsteps of Zhi-Shan: Come with us to visit the regions we serve and appreciate their local cultures and lifestyles. We believe that going into remote townships will enable us to better understand the needs of local communities, so why don’t you embark on an experiential journey to learn from one another through more interactions and dialogues.
