When the Chinese New Year is just around the corner, Dihua Street is always packed with people of all shapes, sizes, and ages purchasing Chinese New Year commodities. The news reports are always commentating on how much the price of Chinese New Year commodities has increased this year and the current state of the economy. However, how many people in the crowd understand the significance of Chinese New Year commodities? What about the historical significance and cultural context of Dadaocheng? Thriving tourism may bring about financial benefits but overcrowding causes the quality of tourism to decline or lead to environmental destruction.
“Walk in Taiwan” is an introspection of tourism and travel. We see the sustainable development of the local community as our social responsibility. The “Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC)” divides the framework of the sustainable tourism principle into 4 major dimensions: Sustainable Management, Social and Economic Benefits, Cultural Heritage, and Environment. “Walk in Taiwan” draws inspiration from this framework to design our guided tour itineraries; we aim to develop the local community via in-depth cultural tours that also showcase the local products. Since the launch of the first guided tour route in Dadaocheng in 2012, “Walk in Taiwan” has conducted paid guided tour services for over 60,000 people and designed more than 400 cultural guided tours as well as light journey itineraries. Furthermore, we have collaborated with over 200 expert docents from various disciplines and local place makers. The organization also prospered from its humble beginnings as an individual cultural worker into a team consisting of over a dozen people.
We believe that experiential education is the best method to get acquainted with Taiwan's culture, thus “Walk in Taiwan” encourages university and college students to participate in local light journeys with in-depth guided tours to genuinely appreciate the place of their birth, where they grew up, or even seek future employment in person. We hope to endow guided tour participants with a profound, unique experience, allowing them to feel the diverse local characteristics, in turn, gain insight into Taiwan's culture. By engaging in conscious consumption and actions, we will be able to foster sustainable local developments and achieve common good with the land. “Walk in Taiwan” offers more than an opportunity to partake in the itinerary, it is also a chance to engage in practical activities. Every year, we host docent and supporting staff recruitment and training programs; by becoming partners of “Walk in Taiwan”, the students can further study local history and culture, thereby continuing the heritage and memories of the land by appreciating life stories found in every corner of the region.
Taiwan features rich, diverse local characteristics that should be introduced to the international community. We believe that understanding the profound culture of Taiwanese society is our social responsibility, hence we aspire to let the world know that in addition to Taipei 101 and the National Palace Museum, Taiwan has so much more to offer. We also feel that we will only truly embrace globalization under the influence of neoliberalism if we understand the diverse cultural meaning of Taiwan.
