CHIMEI Museum is a gift to Taiwan from its founder, Mr. Wen-Long Shi.
At a young age, Mr. Shi was inspired by the Tainan Prefecture Educational Museum and thus aspired to build a museum for the public one day so that people in Taiwan would not need to travel abroad for Western culture and art.
After CHIMEI Group’s business took off, Mr. Shi focused his energy on collecting fine art and continued the endeavors through the CHIMEI Culture Foundation that he later founded. With the support from CHIMEI Corporation, he established CHIMEI Museum in 1992, which was relocated to its current address and reopened to the public in 2015. The building of the museum is inspired by classical western architecture. Its collections can be divided into four categories: Western fine art, musical instruments, arms and armour, and natural history.
Mr. Shi wants to share things he loves and bring happiness and warmth to the public, so he created a public venue that promotes equal access to art and culture. He wants to make the space of this venue, both indoor and outdoor, friendly to everyone. CHIMEI Museum was designed to embody these ideals and strives to realize the spirit of social responsibility. On that account, the building of CHIMEI Museum was donated to the government and was transformed into a public building. Furthermore, CHIMEI also adopted 40 hectares of Tainan Metropolitan Park to create a luxuriantly green park. The park, whose canopy coverage rate is 25%, features over 60 tree species and has nearly 4,000 trees. There are also 30 species of birds and 31 species of insects observed in the park, making CHIMEI Museum a popular place for leisure and culture among citizens.
CHIMEI Museum currently has a collection of approximately 12,000 pieces of artworks and various cultural artifacts. The professional team has meticulously curated a diverse array of exhibitions, performances, and learning activities to provide the general public with a barrier-free visiting and learning environment. Since 1992, the museum has served over 16 million visitors by offering opportunities to broaden and enrich their perspectives.
As of today, CHIMEI Museum houses a collection of some of the most world-renowned violins in the world, and yet it remains humble and continues to innovate and evolve with time as it proactively keeps in touch with museums overseas, partakes in international museum seminars, negotiates loan exhibitions, exchanges experiences, conducts seminars, and facilitates collaborations with international violin organizations. Prominent associations of violin and bow makers in the U.S. and Italy have held seminars at CHIMEI Museum.
Besides preserving and maintaining its collections, CHIMEI Museum also puts a significant amount of effort into creating a database for its collections and sharing the abundant resources it has with the public. The museum is part of the Ministry of Culture’s Collections Network. People can now take advantage of the 720-degree VR guided tour service and browse all the permanent exhibition halls in detail online.
Coming from a humble background, Mr. Shi has committed himself to charity after becoming successful. He sponsors domestic artistic talents as part of his social responsibilities. In order to train future specialists in museology, CHIMEI Museum offers internship chances to university and college students so that they can gain experiences from working in a top-notch museum. CHIMEI Arts Award aims to nurture artistic and musical talents. With 335 award recipients over its 32-year history, approximately TWD 120 million have been given out. The most talked-about feature of the museum is of course its free violin loaning service. Since 2004, CHIMEI has lent its violins for more than 4,600 times, benefitting countless music students in the country.
Also, CHIMEI Museum strives to create innovative learning experiences by exploring new perspectives for art. For instance, it has conducted projects including a real-life game that teaches about the exhibits and a panoramic audiovisual space, the “Room of Time,” that helps visitors gain further insight into stories behind a painting. CHIMEI also offers a “Walk-In Orchestra,” the first of its kind in the world and a theatrical guided tour - “Mechanical Musical Instruments Performance.”
Since its opening, CHIMEI Museum has organized a wide range of art and social activities to meet the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. It has also forged strategic alliances with various schools and enterprises to bring resources together in the hope of fulfilling social responsibilities. The following are some examples: the “Art Therapy Program” was launched in conjunction with the Department of Psychiatry of the Chi Mei Medical Center to provide patients with the best learning environment; the “Traveling Art – CHIMEI Museum Replica Painting Itinerant Exhibition” toured over 80 elementary schools, junior high schools, and other public spaces; “In Search of Art and Aesthetics” was a program held in conjunction with the Ministry of Education to design museum-inspired courses, such as oil painting and sculpture restoration.
Through diligent cultivation, CHIMEI Museum strives to become a museum of happiness that can inspire the public to be more inclusive and social-minded, increase visitors’ artistic and cultural knowledge, and elevate people’s souls.
