Internationally renowned primate research expert Dr. Jane Goodall established the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) in 1977, initially to study chimpanzees and promote chimpanzee conservation. In recent years, Dr. Goodall has actively spread the concept of conservation to the world. More than 30 JGI branch associations have been established worldwide. Jane Goodall Institute Taiwan was established in 1998 as the first JGI organization in Asia to promote the global environmental education program — "Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Program".
This year marks the 22nd year of JGI Taiwan. Throughout the years, JGI Taiwan has promoted a wide range of environmental education projects, with the hope that the Roots & Shoots program can thrive and spread both on campus and in community. We are committed to cultivating young students and making them a force for positive change in the world. At the same time, we have actively participated in many international initiatives, striving to connect with the world, and promoting Taiwan's efforts in sustainable living.
In 1991, Dr. Jane Goodall proposed the global youth program the Roots & Shoots program to encourage young people to take concrete actions on issues concerning the environment, animals, and their communities. During the 22 years of the program in Taiwan, we have actively cultivated young students and helped them gain a deeper understanding of the urgent problems faced by our environment. At the same time, we design specific initiatives and action plans to bring positive changes in society. As of now, more than 1,000 Roots & Shoots groups have been established all over Taiwan. These groups consist of parents, teachers, students, and community residents who work together for Taiwan’s animals, environment, and communities.
In addition to setting up the Roots & Shoots program groups, we have also held outreach and promotional activities on campuses and in major public spaces, in the hope of raising awareness of environmental protection. JGI has organized and hosted environmental art workshops and activities for almost a decade. In the last ten years, we have assisted elementary and secondary schools in Hsinchu, Taipei, and New Taipei to set up Roots & Shoots groups to guide students to learn about the secrets of animals. Students are then instructed to use various recycled materials to create artworks featuring interesting and cute animal props. In addition, we invited a music artist from France to write live and fun songs about animals with them. They wrote lyrics and composed music together. In 2020, we hope to go further and create stories about animals with children using paper and shadow puppet techniques.
With the generous sponsorship from individuals and groups, the Green Thumb Project promoted by JGI Taiwan have now spread all over Taiwan. At present, more than 200 sites have been established and thousands of native plants have been planted. These native species not only provide food sources and shelter for wild animals but also enrich the ecological environment of the campus and provide a natural and fitting site for environmental education. By using their hands to plant the native flora species, teachers and students participating in the Green Thumb Project (GTP) have felt a deep connection to nature. GTP enhanced their sensitivity to the environment and made them take concrete initiatives to implement environmental protection practices.
At the same time, in order to elicit concrete actions from the Roots & Shoots programs, the institute began to promote experimental education programs that integrate natural ecology into students' curriculum. Currently, we have partnered with 10 families in Taipei to establish the Jane Goodall Sustainability Academy, and are actively preparing for the establishment of a Jane Goodall experimental school in Taipei.
In addition, JGI Taiwan has also partnered with Chang Jung Christian University on various projects, including campus ecological art courses, animal carnivals, and an international bachelor's degree program in sustainable development. Dr. Jane Goodall visited Taiwan in 2016. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed to establish the "International College of Practice & Education for the Environment (ICPEE)," with Dr. Jane Goodall serving as the honorary dean, and the International Program of Sustainable Development (IPSD)" was established. IPSD accepted international students recommended by JGI associations around the world. There are currently 87 international students from the Roots & Shoots program around the world in the degree program. The first class will graduate next year. We foresee a strong force for positive changes will come out from these initiatives.
JGI is actively promoting "Roots & Shoots" programs in more than 30 countries around the world. In order to provide opportunities for young people from all over the world to communicate, “Global Youth Summits" have been held at Windsor Castle in the United Kingdom for the past few years so that youths from all over the world can exchange their experiences and discuss the initiatives taken in their countries. Through workshop discussions, transnational action plans are formulated as an attempt to solve common environmental and ecological conservation issues. For instance "No Waste November Initiative" has been held for many years. In 2020, the Asia-Pacific Roots and Shoots Youth Summit was held for the first time in Taiwan, where regional environmental issues were discussed through online meetings and forums. An action plan for the Asia-Pacific region was formed to address environmental and social issues.
At present, the Roots & Shoots program promoted by JGI Taiwan have spread throughout Taiwan. Not only have we partnered with schools and organizations, but we have also worked with JGI associations in other countries, thereby expanding the international exposure for our students. The philosophy and purpose of this association are very consistent with the strategy that the USR project aims to promote. Teachers and students who are concerned with and willing to choose a sustainable lifestyle that protects the environment are welcome to contact JGI Taiwan to jointly "promote knowledge, cultivate aspiration, and inspire activism" through education and practical workshops.
