We believe that knowledge is within the field, and the school is based on the land. By crossing 23.5 degrees latitude north together, we insist on the practice through labor and learn humbly from the land.
We learn by breaking traditional thoughts and frames, we play and make friends while building the artspot of the community.
Established in 2004, Taiwan Field School participates in the fields of community building and young talent cultivation as a nonprofit organization in the early period. Situated in Chiayi since 2015, the School entered the Japanese dormitories located in the old Chiayi prisons while using repair to replace the rental. By cultivating the local and village regions via the “environmental aesthetics,” “innovative experiment,” “learning from labor,” “youth empowerment,” “social group weaving” and “circular design” the school is devoted to the sustainable operation of the environmental spheres. The mission of Taiwan Field School is to make the community friendlier so that the youth can view the city as their home. Bearing the responsibility of connecting local universities and leading students to enter the community for community activity participation, the team members bring their professional backgrounds of architecture, landscape design, visual design, education, and business administration into full play to build new local spots together, improve co-creation and learning abilities of the community and cultivate the emotional identification and homecoming of the youth.
The planning of the Taiwan Field School includes 2 main themes of community building and area revitalization. In the aspect of community building, the team executed the “Environment Reconstruction Plan of the Community Planner in Chiayi City” in 2015 to assist in reconstructing the messy environment and idle space to the promenade, green community corners, and community gathering location. So far this plan benefited more than 100 units and effectively motivated more than 10,000 residents in the community. In addition, through long-term escorting as well as yearly and stage planning, various idle spaces in Chiayi City have been reconstructed to city highlights. For example, the team spent 4 years repairing the pickle factory abandoned for 22 years to transform it into youth entrepreneurship “Talent Workshop.” Also, the “Jingzhong Community” in the East District transformed from an abandoned medical station of national defense to a blissful traditional grocery store while the “Pineapple Company” that used to be a pineapple can factory in the Japanese colonial period is undergoing reconstruction as the parent-child market via the market regeneration concept adopted by the team.
As for area revitalization, Taiwan Field School established the Japanese dormitories in the old Chiayi prison as the “interdisciplinary living village.” The team adopted the concept of “crossing the fields!” to reinterpret the meaning of “field.” Members started from the texts of the old prison village to jointly demonstrate the process of losing to regaining freedom and thereby to know your partners again and find back the sharing good relationship between humans and the environment. In addition, the team tries to develop features of the prison administration culture such as labor service, skill training, and teaching education. By introducing positive educational meaning and transforming it into 6 main themes of “working together,” “constructing together,” “learning together,” “eating together,” “farming together” and “starting up together,” we strengthen the sensual experience of the participants and develop the local connection via physical learning experience to connect the past and contemporary humanities cultures and promote the deep cultural heritage of Chiayi.
In recent years, the team adopted the industry-academia collaboration to hold courses with National Chiayi University, Nanhua University, and Fu Jen Catholic High School. By introducing teachers from the industry and providing places for practice, we enable the students to practice their course learning in the communities in Chiayi and develop their talents. For example, the teachers and students of the landscape department can assist the communities in Chiayi in the reconstruction of greening and beautification and space planning; the Department of Applied Sociology applies the social design concept to explore the transformation possibility of the old Chiayi prisons; students in the department of advertising design focus on the community aesthetics to provide designs combining their graduation exhibits. In 2020, Taiwan Field School first worked with the National Chung Cheng University Adult and Continuing Education to apply for the MOE Teaching Practice Research Program. To lead students to go deep into the declined communities in Chiayi and guide them to think for activity design and marketing programs via the curriculum planning of a term, we expect to revitalize the community space and recreate the glory of the community.
SDG11.3 of the United Nations is “By 2030, enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory, integrated and sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries.” The action of Taiwan Field School in the local communities not only corresponds to the spirit of social innovation but also responds to the imagination of the present international community regarding the joint participation and containment in the community space. In this case, we experiment and explore through physical labor and practice; unite our partners, and share our learning through interdisciplinary communication.
