Social Practice Plan of Yunlin Chicken Industry: Modeling and Sustainable Operation of Traceable Supply Chain
National Yunlin University of Science and Technology
The micro film starts from a crowded shopping mall, where a father and son go shopping for dinner. Meanwhile, an office lady also shops for food from a website, and they all purchase a certain brand of frozen chicken. After the lady places an order, she quickly received the ordered chicken from a logistic agent. From the QR code in the package, the father and son and the office lady learned that the food actually comes from a complicated chicken supply chain - from the production, traceability management, cold chain logistics, wholesale, poultry transport, ranch breeding to chicks to hatch. In a reverse fashion, the film brings out the theme: " Building Yunlin Chicken Industry Traceability Supply Chain and Sustainable Operations."
Chicken is an indispensable source of food, it is rich in vitamins, and also a good source of protein. Native chicken, compared with white broiler chicken, has a longer feeding cycle but higher nutritional content and is therefore more popular in Taiwan. Taiwan produces about 160 million chickens a year, or about 217,000 metric tons, with a value of 19.8 billion Taiwan dollars. Yunlin County is Taiwan's most important native chicken production, the number of chicken farmers, the number of farms, and the total number of breeding are the top in Taiwan. Due to the limited size, most chicken farms use traditional management, resulting in the frequent emergence of food safety problems. In addition, avian influenza has become a nightmare for farmers. Whenever an outbreak occurs, it often leads to an entire cull. Due to the incalculable social costs and economic losses, cross-supply chain traceability management is urgent.
Professor Wu, Chin-Tung of Yunlin University of Science and Technology (Yuntech) went on to explain that traceability management has been the core issue of the Intelligent Agricultural Park Research Center of Yuntech for many years. The research center would like to help Yunlin's local chicken industry to do complete traceability, improving the "value" of chickens but not just raising the "price". Motivated by local demands, Yuntech participates in the University Social Responsibility Program. It is worth mentioning that, since 2015 the Intelligent Agricultural Park Research Center has cultivated four start-ups, two directly involved in the program, one of which developed the supply chain traceability management platform used in the program. Through simple cloud management tools, the chicks, vaccines, feed, pastures, slaughtering, logistics, wholesale, vendors, and other upstream and downstream manufacturers are all integrated together. Consumers can now get a complete "product foodprint", and the authorities of the supply chain can trace the chickens from both directions, effectively manage the food safety and marketing order. Hong Jia-hui is from the second start-up company (Cheng-Hsin Agricultural Services Company) and is responsible for assisting supply chain manufacturers to implement cloud platform, making the supply chain traceability transparent.
In addition to the linkage to the chicken industry, Professor Wu further explained that in order to cultivate the cross-domain talents needed for the chicken industry, the Sustainable Development and Social Practice Research center and the Intelligent Agricultural Management program of Yuntech offer three courses:
"Social Dream-Maker" is a new course offered in the first semester of 2020 academic year. This course guides students to understand the social responsibility of the university and their connection to society. Sharing USR practice cases with co-teachers allows students to enter different learning areas in the course and explore how to connect their expertise with local social issues.
"Intelligent Agricultural Management" is a regular course offered in the first semester of 2020 academic year. This course is student-centric, self-exploration to solve problems. There are four main topics: 1. introduction of fundamental agriculture knowledge through expert seminars, 2. introduction of program roadmap to facilitate students plan careers and find out entrepreneurship opportunities, 3. experiencing farm management and products marketing through practical projects, 4. introduction of Yuntech USR agricultural projects.
"Intelligent Farm Management" is also a regular course offered in the second semester of 2019 academic year. It introduces intelligent farm management practices in depth to guide students to apply their expertise in agriculture.
In addition to the curriculum, this year a new entrepreneurship team was cultivated to be selected in the first phase of the U-start Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program and elected as one of the well-operated team candidates in the second phase. The team has found a start-up company in June. The company offers Global G.A.P. electronic certification coaching services and is the fourth innovative start-up of our research center.
Yuntech implements chicken supply chain traceability management platform. It has integrated research and development capabilities of the academic community to link seamlessly the information of the industrial supply chain and create a safer and more value-added product for the chicken industry.
Yuntech has made efforts to contribute to the university's social responsibility. At the same time, through the curriculum to train the industry's necessary talent, upgrade the chicken industry, promote regional prosperity, increase employment opportunities. In summary, Yuntech has contributed eight goals of the 17 United Nation’s sustainable development goals SDGs: No Hunger, Good Health and Well-Being, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industrial Innovation and Infrastructure, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption and Production, Life on Land, and Partnership for the Goals.
The micro film ends in a warming dinner. The chicken on the dining table is no longer just nutritional and safe food, but also a valuable product that promotes the sustainable development of all aspects of the supply chain. It is expected the chicken supply chain traceability management platform can not only help make food safer but also make the chicken industry sustainable.
